August 8 @ 8:00 am - August 10 @ 5:00 pm

The Tupper Lake Open Pro-Am: History and tradition.

Whether you’re a seasoned player or simply a fan of great golf, the Tupper Lake Open Pro-Am is a tournament worth knowing. A “Pro-Am”—short for Professional-Amateur—is a unique event where club professionals compete alongside amateur golfers in the same tournament. It’s where rising stars test their game, veterans defend legacies, and community members play shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the region’s best. For spectators, it’s a front-row seat to high-level golf and a summer celebration rolled into one.

Every second weekend in August, a tradition unlike any other returns to the heart of the Adirondacks. The Tupper Lake Open Pro-Am Golf Tournament is more than a sporting event—it is a celebration of community, competition, and the enduring love of the game. Held at the historic Tupper Lake Golf Club, this event has grown to become the most distinguished golf tournament in the Adirondack region and the broader North Country.

With a history spanning over 75 years, the Pro-Am has drawn pros and amateurs from across the Northeast and beyond. 12 time PGA Tour winner Wayne Levi won the tournament three times in the 1970s. Scott Berliner, a five-time champion and one of the most respected pros in the region, has been a regular contender. Matt Campbell set the tournament scoring record in 2020 with a blazing 62 and total score of 130. And in the 1960s, Lee Elder—who later made history as the first Black golfer to play in the Masters—claimed the Tupper Lake Open title.

The tournament’s early decades saw a wave of regional professionals from across New York and New England making the trip to Tupper Lake each summer to take on the challenging Donald Ross-designed layout. The course, carved into the side of Mount Morris and weaving through tall pines and Adirondack vistas, offered a unique and demanding test. Throughout the ’50s and ’60s, the event gained popularity as both a proving ground for aspiring pros and a social highlight of the local calendar.

As the tournament matured in the ’80s and ’90s, it became not only a competitive fixture but also a summer tradition. Families and spectators gathered around the clubhouse, volunteers pitched in from across the region, and many local amateurs measured their game against top-tier competition. Players returned year after year, forming friendships and rivalries that added to the lore.

Today, the format remains a 36-hole stroke play competition over two days, with Friday reserved for practice rounds and a skins game. Friday night also features long drive and putting contests, often sponsored by TaylorMade and other major brands. These events are free and open to the public, and spectators are strongly encouraged to attend—the long drive contest in particular is one of the most exciting showcases of power and skill you’ll see all summer.

Tournament play takes place throughout Saturday and Sunday, and spectators are welcome to walk the course, follow groups, or watch players come in on the 18th green. It’s one of the few chances each year to see elite golf played in a setting as stunning as Tupper Lake.

This tournament offers some of the most competitive payouts in the region: $2,000 for the top professional, $1,000 for the leading senior pro, and a range of prizes for amateur division winners. More than just a golf tournament, the weekend includes music, food, and camaraderie in a scenic Adirondack setting.

The Tupper Lake Open Pro-Am is powered by the support of local businesses and national sponsors. Their contributions fuel the experience. If you’re interested in sponsoring, please reach out to Evan LaBarge.

This event brings in players from New York, New England, Canada, and across the U.S. It boosts the local economy and serves as a summer homecoming for many. It is, without a doubt, the premier golf event in the Adirondacks and North Country—a living legacy of sport and community.
